Servings 12 cubes

Ingredients

  • 1 orange, peeled
  • 1 lemon, peeled
  • 1 thumb-size piece fresh ginger (about 2 inches or 5 cm)
  • 1 thumb-size piece fresh turmeric (about 2 inches or 5 cm)
  • 2-3 tablespoons honey

Optional

  • chopped lemon and/or orange peel (chopped small to fit in ice cub tray)

Instructions

  • Peel the orange and lemon and add to a blender. If using, chop the peel into small pieces to add to the ice cube tray later. Set the peels aside.
  • Wash the ginger and turmeric (no need to peel) and add it to the blender along with the honey.
  • Blend on medium-high speed for about 45 seconds, until smooth.
  • If using chopped peels, add a few pieces of lemon and orange peel to each ice cube mold.
  • Pour the mixture evenly into each mold. Depending on the size of the orange and/or lemon, I can usually fill 10-12 ice cube molds. Freeze the mixture until sets.
  • When ready to use, drop a frozen cube into warm water for a cozy hot drink, or into cold water for a refreshing twist. Add a bit more honey if you like it sweeter.

Notes

  • Balance the flavour - if the citrus is too tart, add a touch more honey. If it's too spicy, use less ginger next time.
  • Use a silicone ice cube tray to make the cubes easy to remove.
